Company Background

Canton - Tops in Quality and Price Class

The picturesque highland community of Weilrod, Germany (not far from Frankfurt, the country's major financial center), may seem an unlikely spot for the country's largest and best selling manufacturer of high fidelity loudspeakers, but Canton wasn't always a big company.

Canton started out here with a very simple mission statement – to produce the best loudspeakers in their class.

Today, the goal is only slightly different -- to produce the best loudspeakers in every quality and price class.

To achieve this, Canton creates timeless designs that perform exceptionally well with a level of quality that is second to none. This approach expresses the way of life that has always been associated with a love of music. Consequently, the main customer group for Canton is found among those people for whom “pure” music pleasure is of particular importance.

Another important characteristic of Canton is the personal, individual manufacturing of speakers from A to Z from a single source. The great production depth has always ensured excellent and consistent quality. This means the employees have made a substantial contribution in earning the company’s first-class reputation. Sound, technology, finishing - all of this to perfection, this is the calling of every single employee at Canton. All of the decisive steps are chosen and implemented in-house - from the development to design to production. The employees work in small teams, each responsible for maintaining continually high quality. Every production step is accompanied by quality control. This exceptional attention to detail allowed Canton to be the first German loudspeaker company to offer a five-year guarantee on its products.

A visit to Canton shows that a great deal of the work is still done by hand. A team of developers brood continually over new materials, the construction of the enclosures and new technical innovations.

Today, Canton benefits from a broad foundation of basic research including computer simulations. After the basic design is completed on the computer, the prototype is built. The prototype is then immediately placed for analysis in an anechoic chamber in which absolutely no other acoustic disturbances can falsify the results. The knowledge gained from research and development is then passed on to the construction department and used to design the series production on modern CAD systems. A pre-series insures the quality of the final production series. The production is then performed in smaller workgroups. Everything is assembled by hand and immediately checked against the specifications from the reference unit.

Canton Elektronik GmbH + Co. KG was founded in 1973. In 1999, Günther Seitz, a founding partner, originally responsible for all technical areas of the company, assumed management of all aspects of the business. Canton has shaped the construction of the  German and European loudspeaker industry for more than 25 years.

Since the early 1970s, the United States market has been supported by the subsidiary, Canton Electronics Corporation, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In the U.S., Canton products are popular with quality-focused specialty retailers and custom installers. In Minneapolis, the president of Canton Electronics Corp. is Paul Madsen, and Pat Mountain is the national sales manager.
