Atlantic Technology's H-PAS™ PowerBar PB-235 is the First Soundbar that Doesn't Need a Subwoofer

NEW YORK (6/27/12) -- Atlantic Technology will demonstrate its revolutionary H–PAS home theater soundbar loudspeaker at the CEA Line Show opening here today.

While most soundbars need to be paired with bulky separate subwoofers to achieve full-range sound with adequate bass performance, the Atlantic Technology PowerBar PB-235 delivers full-range performance with rich bass response down to 47 Hz without the need for a separate subwoofer. It also accomplishes this with much lower levels of harmonic distortion, a performance characteristic reflected in exceptional dialog clarity and intelligibility.

The PowerBar PB-235 was designed using Atlantic Technology's H-PAS™ design algorithms to create an optimal acoustic pathway of chambers, galleries, traps, and vents for the sound generated by the back-sides of the two small woofers.

The patented H-PAS configuration permits speaker designers to achieve a level of performance comparable to that of much larger conventional speakers while using much smaller drivers. H-PAS speaker designs can be run to full power without generating the high levels of distortion typical of larger diameter woofers. When watching a movie, this low level of distortion will be heard as sharp explosions rather than muffled bursts, and clearer dialog rather than often muffled speech, a side effect often associated with subwoofers reaching up to higher frequencies to meet the limited bass response of most soundbars

The Atlantic Technology H-PAS PowerBar 235 is a two-channel powered sound bar that is all contained in a single 42-3/4 x 6-1/2 x 6-1/2 inch cabinet that can be wall mounted beneath a video display or inverted for shelf mounting. To accommodate these different modes, the control panel display can be electronically rotated for correct view in either configuration. Alternate display labels are also provided for both orientations.

The PB 235 is powered by an on-board amplifier that supplies 80 total watts RMS. With the high performance 4-inch woofers and ¾-inch soft-dome tweeters, it delivers an outstanding unprocessed two-channel stereo experience, and it also contains sophisticated digital signal processing with Dolby Digital® and DTS that effectively develops a three- or five-channel ambient experience for total listener immersion in the video program. It has a coaxial and two optical digital inputs, a rear RCA stereo input, front mini-jacks for portable audio input, and an “optional” RCA subwoofer output for those few who still desire more bass.

"The H-PAS PowerBar 235 is the first sound bar where the subwoofer is truly optional," said Atlantic Technology's president, Peter Tribeman. "The high levels of exceptionally clean bass emanating from such a small cabinet are almost disconcerting until you get used to it. With its built-in digital amp and DSP surround processor, it sounds great as a stereo or theater system in a bedroom, dorm or small apartment."

H-PAS technology is the result of a collaborative effort between Atlantic Technology and Phil Clements of Solus/Clements Loudspeakers, who first recognized that there were ways to beat the old “Iron Law” of acoustics, which for over 50 years has established a fixed relationship between the cabinet size and bass response of loudspeakers. Working jointly with Clements, an engineering team at Atlantic was able to mathematically model Clements' discoveries and make it possible to apply H-PAS design parameters to a wide range of speaker designs.

The Atlantic Technology PowerBar PB-235 will go on sale in September with a suggested retail price of $899.
